Andrew DoanNAME: Andrew Doan POSITION: PresidentPROGRAM/YEAR: Molecular Biology and Genetics (4th Year) YEAR JOINED MVSA: Fall 2007 Likes: Everything! Food, adventures, friends and family. Always willing to try new things Dislikes: Insects or things with many many legs. Nasty business I LOVE MVSA! Pourquoi?: What makes MVSA special are the numerous and priceless moments that I've shared throughout these four years with my fellow friends. When I was first conversed with the VP Internal in 2007, Thao Huynh, I understood that my journey with MVSA and the Vietnamese culture had just begun . This would have been the second time I have formally talked to a Vietnamese person in my life. At that time, I assumed that Thao was a male name. I remember my first words to her in my email; trying to be professional and courteous. "Hello Mr. Thao Huynh..." I said. In response, she replied, "I'm actually a girl lol." Oh boy was I wrong. I won't forget this moment in my life because its always humorous to look back and see how little I knew about the Vietnamese culture. It is remarkable how much we grow and develop individually and together as a team. With great friends that you meet through this club, I finally found my niche, a place to where I could say I feel comfortable and at home. I discovered that it was the MVSA execs and members that defined what I admired most about MVSA. Having grown up with this club for 4 years of my life, it feels as though we have evolved together collectively not as a club, but as a family. It will always be hard to say goodbye to our old friends, but it opens up windows of opportunities to new friends. We still and will always continue to remember and cherish these individuals through the memories that we shared, the time we spent together and the words of wisdom that was passed on from one generation to another. As we welcome and usher in a new generation, I begin to laugh and smile at the great future that these young individuals will experience. Especially since I have see them grow right before my own eyes. Being a individual that didn't know anything about the Vietnamese culture nor had any Vietnamese friends entering University, MVSA has and will always have a place in my heart. It was these people that incorporated me into their lives and shown me wonders of the Vietnamese people, culture, heritage and community. Coming from little Vietnamese background to President of MVSA has shown me that as long as you believe, anything is possible and nothing is every beyond your grasp. If you believe it and conceive it, you can always achieve. Having fun, embracing the moments and letting the world move around you with your best and closest friends are nothing short of amazing. I would not be the same individual that I am today with the support and friendship shared through this club, and its amazing to have met such a wonderful student group. It saddens me to say goodbye, but I am happy to see the future in the younger generation. Thanks you MVSA! =) |

Christine VuChristine is in 4th year Molecular Biology. She enjoys singing with the McMaster Choir, playing intramural volleyball, watching Criminal Minds and eating junk food. Christine doesn't like to lose and to eat lots of eggs. Christine is MVSA's VP Internal and has been a member since 2008. She wishes that students and members would learn and ask questions about their heritage so that they can appreciate the richness of the Vientamese culture and community. |

Katalina ChanHey there! I'm 3rd year Biology and Pharmacology which is a co-op program, and my main thing is badminton. I've been on the varsity team 1st and 3rd year, so I'm at the gym for hours nearly every day. I like to play for fun with friends during the day too! BioPharm keeps me extremely busy. I am, admittedly, a huge nerd and keener. I'm always texting/emailing group members, at a group meeting, or attending events. I was a speaker at the info night, so if you want any details, I'm here to help. This year I applied to my first co-op term, which is like a huge crash course on resumes and interviews. I've worked at a pharmacy, camp and dentist's office before my upcoming position at Health Canada as a Toxicology Evaluator. I also had interviews with big pharmaceutical companies like Janssen and Apotex. I'm always willing to help with job searches or career-what-should-I-do talk. I LOVE that kind of talk. I have to say that I have some strange hobbies. I like the gym, the occasional party/club, and holing up in the darkness of my room to study for days straight... But also I'm a huge exotic plant and reptile enthusiast. Not to mention I love raising hamsters and guinea pigs. I can't wait till I get a dog and a python. One day... One day... When I have money! I hope you come out to a VSA event, so I have the chance to meet you! |

Linh TranMy name is Linh. I grew up in Moscow, Russia and came to Canada in 2009 for school. It seems that it was my destiny to join MVSA from the beginning. Back home when I was surfing McMaster website, I found out about MVSA on the MSU clubs page. I started exploring it and after seeing the pictures and videos, I was like:”These guys seem very open and friendly. If I finally pick Mac, I will probably join them.” I never had Vietnamese friends before as I grew up in the culturally homogenous country; I was really excited about this club. When I came to McMaster campus, first thing that happened to me was... I got lost! I accidentally ran into Anthony in front of TSH and asked him for directions. Well, they didn’t help much lol Anyways, by the end of the day I figured how to get to my rez. Few weeks later my friend Vi invited me to the MVSA General Meeting. I met Anthony there again (which was funny) and all the execs I saw only on the website before and who very soon became my close friends. I started attending events and dance practices. I will never forget the time spent with these amazing people, who are always willing to help and support and who literally became my family. This year I serve as Promotions and Marketing Director in the executive team. I am responsible for raising awareness about our club and upcoming events. Quick facts about me: I am in second year Commerce, I know five languages and I adore music and dance. I am friendly and easy to approach, so if you have any questions or accidentally run into me on campus or anywhere, do not hesitate to come and talk to me J |
